A homemade version of the classic ‘pigs in a blanket’. An easy, quick and kid friendly lunch that wraps little smokies in a homemade crescent roll dough.

This homemade crescent dough recipe is such a great way to incorporate your kids. I have found the most successful lunches to be the the bite size creations they can help make themselves.

I prefer to dip these homemade pigs in a blanket in honey mustard (I prefer
In’tvelds
), but you can also dip in ketchup, regular mustard, ranch or even barbecue sauce.

HOMEMADE PIGS IN A BLANKET ALTERNATIVES

Enjoy as an easy lunch or a party appetizer. The dough is versatile and can be enjoyed with other combinations:

  • Ham and Cheese
  • Bacon and Cheese
  • Peanut Butter and Jelly
  • Full size hot dogs
  • Simply coated in butter with Everything but the Bagel Seasoning

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE PIGS IN A BLANKET

Homemade Dough Ingredients

  • All Purpose Flour
  • Instant Yeast
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Oil
  • Water

Directions

In a stand mixer, whisk together the flour, instant yeast, sugar and salt. Add some warm water and oil. If you don’t have avocado oil, you can substitute with olive oil. Using a dough hook, mix on low for 5-7 minutes. If dough is sticking to the sides of the bowl, add a tablespoon of flour at a time. It will stick to the bottom of the bowl but not to the sides.

Cover and let rise for 30 minutes or until doubled in size. If it hasn’t quite doubled, it doesn’t make much of a difference.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Note: you will need both oven racks.

Lightly flour your work surface. Roll dough out to 12” x 20” rectangle (or close to it). I stretched it with my hands a bit to make it an actual rectangle.

Starting on the long edge, cut 4 equal sections with a pizza cutter. Then cut each of those 4 sections into small triangles, anywhere from 9-11 triangles per section. (This also depends on the preferred dough to sausage ratio. If you want less dough per ‘blanket’, cut more triangles per section).

Place the sausage and piece of cheese at the bottom of the triangle and roll up. Place on a parchment lined cookie sheet seam side down.

Melt some butter and brush the pigs in a blanket before baking. I also sprinkle some sea salt.

Cook for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Rotate pans halfway through. Tent with foil if getting too dark.
