If you have enjoyed Tulip Time here in Pella you have likely seen, heard, or experienced this famous fried bologna sandwich made with Pella’s very own ring bologna.
A traditional fried bologna sandwich features the ring bologna Pella is famous for along with gouda cheese and the occasional burger patty. For my recipe, I stuck with the traditional while giving it an upgrade with an egg and chips for more flavor and texture.
Go ahead and try this easy meal at home by following the directions below, and don’t forget to leave a review and tell me what you think!
Ingredients for this Fried Bologna Sandwich:
Ring Bologna
Buns
Butter
Pepper Jack Cheese
Mustard
Egg
Kettle Chips
You’ll start by buttering the sandwich buns and toasting until golden brown.
Heat up a cast iron pan to medium-low heat while you cut up the Pella ring bologna. Slicing on a diagonal is fun and it also gives you larger pieces for the sandwich. Each slice ends up being about 1/4” thick.
Once the cast iron is hot, lay out your bologna individually and fry for about 3-5 minutes on each side, or until browned.
Then place 5-6 pieces of bologna on the bottom piece of each bun. Immediately add the pepper jack cheese on top. Adding the cheese while the bologna is still hot allows it time to melt while you prepare the rest of the sandwich.
With an already hot cast iron pan, crack and fry one egg per sandwich. Season the egg with salt and pepper after you’ve broken the yolk. Once the first side has browned, flip the egg and add a piece of pepper jack cheese. Allow the cheese time to melt while the other side of the egg fries. Once the egg is done, stack it on top of the fried bologna and melted cheese.
Now take top side of each bun and lather on a generous amount of mustard.
Last but not least make sure to add the kettle chips to the sandwich for some added crunch.
Enjoy the taste of this upgraded traditional fried Pella bologna sandwich for your next lunch!
