If you're a fan of sourdough bread and want to add an extra touch of elegance to your baking, this sourdough braid dough recipe is perfect for you! Not only does it bring the tangy, hearty flavor of sourdough, but the braided shape gives it an impressive, rustic look that's perfect for special occasions, holidays, or just a fun weekend project.

Flavor Ideas

Oh, there are so many delicious directions you could take with a braided dough! Since the braid itself is such a visual showstopper, you can really get creative with the flavors and fillings to make it unique. Here are a few flavor ideas for your braid dough:

  • Pizza OUR FAVORITE:

    • Layer the center with sliced cheese. Top with pizza sauce, sausage, pepperoni, seasonings and more cheese. Braid and cover in an egg wash.

  • Taco Night

  • Spinach and Feta

  • Garlic and Cheese

  • Apple Cinnamon

  • Chocolate Hazelnut

  • Raspberry Cream Cheese

  • Pesto and Mozzarella

Tips for Success:

  • Sourdough Starter: Make sure your sourdough starter is active and bubbly. If you're not sure, do the float test. Take a small amount of starter and drop it in a few cups of water. If it floats, the starter is ready to use.

  • Ferment Time: The reason I love this dough - its so forgiving. I have fermented this anywhere from 6-12 hours, and the outcome was the same. Use a proofing drawer to speed things along, or turn on your oven light on and place the braid dough inside the oven. It's kept just warm enough for the braid to rise a little quicker.

  • Leftovers: This braid will keep for a day or two. Simply pop it in the air fryer to crisp up.

There’s something so satisfying about taking a humble batch of sourdough starter and turning it into a beautiful braided loaf, giving a fun unique twist on pizza night. Or whatever flavors you wish to try. The soft, tangy crumb and golden, crisp crust will make this sourdough braid dough your new go-to recipe. I've used this recipe for years, mainly because the braid dough is just so easy to work with when its time to make dinner. Give it a try!
