Homemade ice cream sandwiched between a cake donut... then covered in chocolate and sprinkles. Does it get any better?
Magic Shell Topping: turning liquid chocolate into a thin brittle when poured over ice cream.
This magic shell is so easy and whipped up in under 5 minutes for whatever ice cream treat you choose. Today's dessert of choice was homemade ice cream and my favorite cake donuts from a local bakery, Vander Ploeg's Bakery here in Pella, Iowa.
Magic shell brings me right back to my ice cream childhood. It was a treat to watch this liquid chocolate harden in seconds, only to devour the entire dessert in minutes. Who knew you could whip this up with just a few staple ingredients?
HOMEMADE MAGIC SHELL INGREDIENTS
Vanilla
Espresso powder (optional)
salt
chocolate chips
coconut oil
cocoa powder
Combine vanilla, espresso powder and salt together until powder dissolves. Set aside.
In a microwaveable bowl, add chocolate chips and coconut oil. Microwave in 15 second intervals, stirring each time. The chocolate doesn’t have to be melted all the way in the microwave. Once chocolate chips are half melted, whisk thoroughly and the rest will melt.
Add the vanilla espresso mixture along with cocoa powder to the melted chocolate and whisk well.
Let cool to room temperature before using.
Remove donut ice cream sandwiches from freezer. Lay on a wire rack over a cookie sheet. Pour magic shell over each donut. Sprinkle with desired toppings.
Devour immediately.
